What is prayer?
Prayer is the means we have to access God with supplication, confession of sin, and thanksgiving through Jesus Christ. Sometimes prayer can be verbal expressions and/or thoughts offered to God. It can also be agreeing with someone else who is praying.
The act of prayer encompasses a number of things;
1. Prayer is a sense of need- prayer has a sense a need, even urgency at times
2. Prayer is an expression of desire- prayer is a great desire for help, aid, and answered prayer
3. Prayer is a spirit of humility- prayer is humility and dependency in word/thought to God
4. Prayer is a privilege of fellowship- prayer is fellowship with God through word/thought
5. Prayer is a bond of union- Believers can have union with other believers when praying together
6. Prayer is an attitude of consecration- prayer with the attitude of surrender to God and His will for your life
The contents of prayer can be anything you would to say to God. Jesus on the Sermon on the Mount gave us a guideline as to what we should pray for. The prayer that we He taught believers to model consisted of worship to God, forgiveness of sin, (God’s )leading in righteousness, request for daily needs to be met, and the return of Christ. Believers’ prayers should reflect the contents of that prayer.
Another good question is, “Does God hear my prayer?” John 9:31 says, “…anyone who is a worshipper of God and does his will, He hears him.” And in James 5:14 it says, “…the prayer of a righteous man can accomplish much.” However, the Bible also says in Isaiah 59:2, “But your iniquities have separated you from your God; and your sins have hidden His face from you, So that He will not hear you.” All believers who have forsaken their sin, God is listening to every prayer offered to Him. And He is eager to glory His Son in the way He answers prayer.
